Sorrow is a mortal endeavor. I have no use for it.

–Chapter 22, Realm Breaker

Domacridhan of Iona, often simply called Dom, is a Vederan warrior and former member of the Companions of the Realm.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Dom is over five hundred years old. He lives in the Vederan enclave of Iona, where he is a prince. He has lived his whole life in the palace of Iona where he was raised as a ward to the Monarch upon the death of his parents. His parents died three hundred years ago. They died fighting the last dragon upon the Ward along the Calidonian coast while seeking glory. The Monarch of Iona, Isibel Beldane, is his aunt and his mother's sister.

Realm Breaker[]

Dom is one of the Companions of the Realm that journey to the Spindle near the Gates of Trec to stop Taristan and Red Ronin. Unbeknownst to the Companions, Taristan has already opened the Spindle and an army of the dead comes through to Allward. Slowly the Companions all die at the hands of the army of the dead, except for Dom and Andry Trelland. As Andry flees the massacre, Dom manages to throw Cortael's Spindleblade at him. After what he witnesses and survives, Dom has made it his mission to save the Ward, despite the majority of the other Vedera refusing to involve themselves.

Dom seeks out Sorasa Sarn in Byllskos, Tyriot. He convinces her to enter into a contract with him to help him find Corayne an-Amarat and bring her alive to Ascal, Galland. Upon finding Corayne in Lemarta, Siscaria and convincing her to come with them, they make a plan to travel from Lemarta to Lecorra and from there, travel by ship to Ascal. While on the journey from Lemarta to Lecorra, Dom, Sorasa, and Corayne are attacked by shades of the Ashlander army. Afterwards, Corayne tells Dom and Sorasa that even before they found her, she had dreamed of the undead creatures for weeks. Dom tells her that her dreams are from What Waits. Dom spends the majority of time on the ship from Lecorra to Ascal belowdecks with severe seasickness.

Personality[]

Dom is very serious and formal. He generally finds humans tiring. He's too noble and heroic for his own good. He's new to lots of human normalcy and thus normally comes across as not human and not relatable. He lacks tact. It's rare for him to smile and he constantly broods. Dom sometimes wishes he could express himself as mortals do. He is not known for feeling emotions strongly. It is a new experience for him to feel such deep grief and anger. His anger is foreign and corrosive in his body. He suffers from the trauma of surviving the massacre at the Spindle near the Gates of Trec. Corayne describes Dom as someone "trying to grieve with no idea how, seeking revenge without direction, a predator with nothing to hunt."[1] He is completely dedicated to supporting Corayne. Dom doesn't enjoy violence, despite being an incredibly skilled fighter and warrior. Instead, he likes the skill, challenge, and strategy involved in sword fighting.

Physical Description[]

Dom is well built, broad, and monstrously tall, at least six and a half feet tall. He doesn't look a day over thirty years old. He has pale skin, blond hair worn in braids, a short blond beard, and fierce emerald eyes. Andry describes him as "more oak tree and antler than anything else."[2] Corayne finds him "offensively handsome" in a way that feels unnatural. His skin feels like stone. He has a broad chest and shoulders. His palms are as big as a dinner plate and his broad hands are crossed with calluses and training scars. While rare, his smile is "a force to be reckoned with, white and wide, his teeth unsettlingly straight."[3] He wears polished leather boots, finely made breeches and tunic, belt, and embossed bracers beneath a gray-green cloak that's embossed with the great stag of his enclave and monarch. He wears a fine, hammered silver ring on one of his fingers. He carries his sword, daggers, knives, and bow and quiver. His greatsword would take two human men to wield. Dom holds himself like a warrior, with a rigid posture. Following the massacre of the Companions, Dom has a scar on the left side of his face, ragged lines have been torn from cheek to neck.

Powers & Abilities[]

As a Vederan, Dom is essentially immortal. He possesses supernatural strength and enhanced senses. They’re faster than even the best trained mortal in every way, including reflexes, reactions, and instincts. Dom can see clearly for miles in the light and dark and can hear the heartbeat of those around him. He doesn’t feel pain from wounds to the same extent as mortals. He also doesn’t feel cold or hunger to the same levels as mortals and doesn’t often have the need to sleep. When he does sleep, he falls asleep almost instantaneously and it's rare for him to dream. They need to eat much less frequently than humans and need half as much sleep as mortals. He is immune to nearly all poisons. They don’t get sick, which allows them to do things like eat a rabbit raw. It is very difficult for him to scar, only magical wounds or creatures from other realms seem to be capable of it. Dom is also a highly trained and skilled swordsman and an incredibly capable warrior.

Relationships[]

Sorasa Sarn[]

Dom and Sorasa are always bickering. Their personalities are almost completely opposite. Sorasa loves teasing Dom because it makes him so uncomfortable. Dom acts like he hates her and is always calling her a murderer. But underneath there is a mutual respect of the other that develops as they travel together. They make an excellent team in a fight. There is also the underlying agreement Dom made with Sorasa, that she will be allowed to kill him in a place of her choosing before the people of her choosing as she believes killing and Elder will gain her reentry into the Amhara. Dom shows his changing feelings towards Sorasa when he senses her guilt at disrupting the Shiran herd by the canyon in the desert. Dom promises her that they will not harm them. When Sorasa risks her own life to save Corayne and Dom in the canyon, something shifts with Dom and he loses some of the anger and disgust towards her.
