To the horizon and beyond it. To whoever I am, in my bones.

–Chapter 6, Realm Breaker

Corayne an-Amarat is one of a few descendants of Old Cor in Allward, which means she has Spindleblood. She is the daughter of Meliz an-Amarat and Cortael of Old Cor, and the niece of Taristan of Old Cor.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Corayne was raised by her mother Meliz an-Amarat in the port city of Lemarta, Siscaria. Due to her years of work as her mother's unofficial clearance agent, Corayne has an extensive knowledge of the Ward and its geography and kingdoms. She knows six different languages as well as Paramount and can attempt two.

Realm Breaker[]

Corayne, accompanied by her guardian Kastio, head to the docks to meet Meliz as she returns from two months at sea with her crew aboard the Tempestborn.

Corayne is found by Domacridhan of Iona with the help of Sorasa Sarn. Dom has brought news about Cortael's death and that Corayne is the only who can save the Ward because of her Spindleblood. At first, Corayne is unwilling to help, but is convinced when Dom tells her that by joining him she will be able to travel the Ward, her greatest desire. They will travel from Lemarta to Lecorra, Siscaria. From there they will travel by ship to Ascal, Galland. While traveling by horseback to Lecorra, they are attacked by a group of shades from the Ashlands. Afterwards, Corayne tells Dom and Sorasa that even before they found her, she had dreamed of the undead creatures for weeks. Dom tells her that her dreams are from What Waits. On the ship to Ascal, Corayne and Sorasa meet an old Jydi crone named Valtik. Sorasa tells her to leave them alone, but Valtik gives Corayne a charm of twisted blue-gray twigs tied with twine and catgut trailing with human finger bones carved into skulls.

Upon arriving in Ascal, Corayne manages to guilt Sorasa into leading Corayne and Dom into the New Palace through the underground tunnels. The three of them find Andry Trelland at his apartment with his mother, Valeri Trelland. Upon meeting Andry, Andry announces that the Companions of the Realm live on, now consisting of himself, Dom, and Corayne insists on including herself. Andry gives Corayne her father's Spindleblade. As soon as she comes into possession of Cortael's Spindleblade, a part of her begins growing that will never let the sword go.

When Taristan attacks her at his betrothal feast to Queen Erida, Corayne is drawn to the Jydi charm. Grasping it in her pocket, Corayne is able to escape Taristan and break through Ronin's power. She uses the charm to scratch Taristan's face. Corayne, Dom, and Andry are rescued by Sorasa and the four of them flee Ascal. The group hides in an abandoned farmhouse to determine their next steps. While there, they find Valtik and she joins their group. Valtik reads some animal bones and announces that their group of five must become seven. Sorasa announces they will travel to Adira next in order to meet Valtik's reading.

In a teashop in Adira, Corayne notices crew members from the Tempestborn, Kireem and Ehjer. The two sailors are talking about the sea monster attack they have just barely survived. It takes everything in Corayne not to run to her mother. Instead, overhearing their conversation leads Corayne to realize that the next open Spindle is in Ibal and is connected to Meer. After leaving Adira, the Companions take a Larsian galley to Almasad. While traveling there, Sorasa and Sigil begin training Corayne to fight.

Personality[]

Corayne's greatest desire is to travel the Ward. She likes to have a plan, an agenda, and a list of objectives. As someone with Spindleblood, she has a distinctive distant longing living inside her. There's something in her that can't sit still. Dom tells her that she "wants the horizon."[1] Corayne is incredibly curious and always wants to know more. Her mind is always working in furious motion. She has a keen gaze and a way of prodding without words. Corayne has a head for direction and can navigate the streets of places she's never been before. She prefers traveling by ship than horse. Corayne hates getting things wrong and has little experience with it. During their journey to stop Taristan, Corayne becomes "harder, sharper, and worn by luck and fate."[2] She has trouble sleeping due to nightmares that she learns are from What Waits.

Physical Description[]

Corayne is seventeen years old and petite. She has golden skin that bronzes in the summer, black hair that shines deep red beneath sunlight, thin lips, a short nose, a grave face, and eyes that are black all the way through. Her eyes are always darting. She has a dusting of freckles on her nose. She wears her hair in a long black braid that's thick as sailing rope. Corayne's typical clothing is a loose shirt, breeches, and soft leather boots.

Powers & Abilities[]

As someone with Corblood, Corayne is capable of opening Spindles using her blood and a Spindleblade. Her Corblood also allows Corayne to sense the ruins of Old Cor in Ascal, despite never having been in the city before. She can feel the pull of a Spindle.

Relationships[]

Meliz an-Amarat[]

Corayne and Meliz have a complicated relationship, but one based on love. Meliz doesn't want Corayne to follow in her footsteps because of the danger inherent in a pirate's life. Corayne, meanwhile, wants to travel the world and chafes at being made to stay in Lemarta. It's Dom who tells Corayne that while "she wants the horizon," her mother is "never going to let her take it."[1] Corayne is eager to impress her mother. Despite their love for one another, Melia's life results in a lack of trust between them.

Quotes[]

  • "Even when it isn't the end of the world, the realm is a dangerous place for women." - Sorasa Sarn to Corayne "And so we became dangerous" - Sigil of the Temurijon to Corayne "Care to dance with us? We who belong nowhere?" - Sorasa Sarn to Corayne

Trivia[]

  • She cannot speak Ishei, Temur, Rhashiran, which is still beyond her grasp, and Jydi is famously impossible for outsiders. She can follow almost every language except Jydi. She can speak Paramount, Ibalet, Siscarian, Madrentine, and Kasan.
  • Her name is pronounced Cor-ane.[3]
  • Corayne is gifted a pair of dirynsima, or dragonclaws, by Hazid lin-Lira. They are vambraces with a steel splint reinforcement and tiny, lethal, triangular spikes on the long outer edge.
  • Corayne can sleep anywhere, even in the saddle. But she doesn't sleep deeply due to nightmares from What Waits.
  • She is most likely the Ward’s equivalent of Iranian or Middle Eastern.
